Blizzards of times past

There is a cartoon character, Maxine, who once said, “Of course Frosty the Snowman was a jolly, happy soul. He never had to drive in a blizzard.”

I remember driving in blizzards in the late 1970’s. My very first car, a 1969 Camaro was the envy of the neighborhood on a hot August day. But not so much when the snow was falling. There was no weight in the back end of the car, and back then the cars had rear-wheel drive, not like the front wheel drive of the cars we have today.

I remember one night driving home from a boyfriend’s house in the snow, and slid right off the road and into a ditch. Thankfully someone driving by stopped and helped push the car back onto the road.

Another time, I was driving home from work in a snowstorm. There was a small bridge overpass that went above the Thruway. As I drove onto the bridge, I noticed a guy from high school standing there with his thumb up, hitchhiking. As soon as I saw him, my car started sliding sideways, and I slid across the bridge until finally I was back on the road. I did not stop to pick him up, as I felt it was too dangerous to try to stop. And I figured that after he saw how my car handled, he wouldn’t want a ride anyway.

Now I drive a boring little Honda with front-wheel drive.
