In my church, we often recite, “When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come again.”
In 1 Corinthians 11:24, Paul explains:
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (NIV)
The King James says it this way:
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Colossians 2:15 shows us who He “shewed” or proclaimed it to:
And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
So whenever we take Communion, we are reminding the powers and principalities that Jesus has triumphed over them! We are the Body of Christ, and when we partake of Communion, we are proclaiming that we are also victorious over them and their schemes.
Have a great day!
Blessed!
