The Hem of His Garment

While Jesus was on the way to Jairus’ house to heal his daughter, a woman in the crowd pushed forward and touched the hem of His garment. She had been ill for twelve years with a constant flow of blood. She had spent all her money on doctors and wasn’t any better. But her faith in Jesus was so strong that she believed that if she only touched His hem, she would be healed. As soon as she touched the hem, she felt the flow of blood dry up. She knew she was healed immediately.

Jesus knew immediately that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My Clothes?”

The disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging (crowd) all around you, and you say, “Who touched me?”

The woman, was afraid, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, and came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

Jesus turned around to her and said, “Be of good cheer, daughter, your faith has made you well.”

He called her daughter. She was probably afraid that He was going to chastise her, as she was unclean according to the Law. She wasn’t supposed to be out in public. But Jesus concentrated on the relationship, not the Law.

Days later, when they had crossed over to the other side of the sea, they came to the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all the surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of HIs garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well. (Matt. 14:34-36)

The woman had started out, desperate, alone and broke. She touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and started a whole revival movement of people who believed on Him.

Sometimes, that’s where we need to start.
