We had an interesting conversation at Bible Study yesterday. We were talking about getting closer to God, to desiring his presence. God does bless us with “things” but sometimes He just wants US to want HIM.
I taught my dog to “shake hands” and reinforced it by giving him a doggie treat. So now, when he wants a treat, he comes to me with his paw raised as if to shake hands. If I try to pet him, he moves away from me–he doesn’t want to spend him with me, he wants a treat!
It made me think of times that I have gone to God because I wanted or needed something, and I just wanted the THING more than I even wanted to spend time in the presence of God. Ouch. Well, now, I know what that feels like!
A friend shared a story of her dog, who was scared because of a big storm; there was thunder and lightning. The dog was running around the house crazy, and actually ran out into the storm, and ran to the road, and got hit by a car!
There are so many scriptures that tell us that God is our refuge, our shelter. If we hide in Him, we are safe, but no, we want to run around trying to fix our problems by ourselves, usually just making the problem worse.
God used my dog’s relationship with me to teach me the inverse: about my relationship with Him. Like the old saying, “If God can use the jawbone of an ass….” (Judges 15:15)
** I hope to be back on a more “normal” blogging schedule. But we’ll see what happens!
