Once upon a time, it was macho to grab the check as the waitress put it on the table. Men would fight over it.
“I’ll pay!”
“No, I’ll pay!” they would argue back and forth.
The other day, I watched folks at the table next to me in the diner.
The waitress placed the check in the middle of the table.
The late-twenty-something guy put his hands in his pockets.
The late-fifty-something man lunged forward and siezed the check.
No argument ensued.
